DICOM

The exchange of digital (DICOM) images and other data is widely used in the medical community. A DICOM file contains binary data elements. Each element is structured from a tag indicating the information type of the selected Value Representation (VR) field, which also indicates the data type, the field length providing the data length, and the data itself. Each data element must be read sequentially in order to traverse the file and locate the desired data. The programme stores information about the image format and location, as well as the image itself. Non-essential data, such as the patient’s date of birth, is omitted. DICOM files are used in practices that use software from other sources capable of accepting the DICOM format. CT Dent will support the DICOM protocol for any planning software available on the market.
